Warwick Prize for Women in Translation facts for kids
Have you ever read a book that was originally written in another language? The Warwick Prize for Women in Translation is a special award that celebrates amazing books by women from all over the world that have been translated into English.
This prize was started in 2017 by the University of Warwick. Its goal is to help more books by female authors get translated and read in the United Kingdom and Ireland. Often, more books by men are translated than by women, and this prize wants to help fix that imbalance.
The award is open to many types of books, including fiction, poetry, and even books for kids and teens. The only rule is that the original author must be a woman. The gender of the person who translates the book doesn't matter.
The prize is £1,000. It is split between the author and her translator. If the author is no longer alive, the translator receives the full amount. This recognizes the hard work of both the writer and the person who brings their story to a new language.
