Watamu is a lovely small town found on the coast of Kenya, right by the Indian Ocean. It's about 105 kilometers north of Mombasa and 15 kilometers south of Malindi. Most people in Watamu work in tourism, helping visitors, or in fishing. Around 30,000 people lived there in 2020.

Watamu is famous for its amazing white sand beaches. Under the clear water, you can find beautiful coral reefs. Many people think it's one of the best beaches in Africa. This is because of its super clear water and shiny silver sand.

Who Lives in Watamu?

The original people of Watamu are called the Bajuni. Over time, people from other Kenyan groups have moved here. These include the Luo, Kisii, Kikuyu, Kamba, Kalenjin, and Luhyas. They often come to work in the hotels and help visitors.

Watamu's Long History

People have lived in Watamu for a very long time. Scientists have found old things that show people were here as far back as the 13th century. This means Watamu has been a home for over 700 years!

Watamu in Pop Culture

Watamu has even inspired music! An Afro-fusion singer named Masha Mapenzi created a musical album called Uhiko. This album is titled after Watamu.
