How the Tournament Worked
The twelve teams were first divided into two groups. Each group had six teams. In this first round, called the preliminary round, every team played against every other team in their group once.
After the preliminary round, the top four teams from each group moved on. These eight teams went into the knockout round. The teams that finished fifth and sixth in their groups were eliminated.
