What Happens in the Book
This story is about what happens when Mrs. Jewls, a beloved teacher, goes on maternity leave. This means new substitute teachers come to Wayside School. But these aren't just any substitutes! Each one is stranger than the last, bringing their own unique and often hilarious problems to the students of the thirtieth story classroom. The students have to deal with these unusual teachers and their strange powers or habits.
Meet the Substitute Teachers
When Mrs. Jewls leaves, a series of very odd substitute teachers arrive. Each one has a secret or a special ability that makes school life even more unusual for the students.
Mr. Gorf, the Voice Stealer
Mr. Gorf is the son of Mrs. Gorf, a teacher who caused a lot of trouble before. Mr. Gorf has a very unusual nose with three nostrils. The middle nostril has a strange power: it can steal people's voices! He uses this power to take the voices of students. Then, he uses their voices to call their parents and say mean things.
Mr. Gorf was very angry about what happened to his mother. He eventually loses his own voice and all the voices he stole when he sneezes them out. He even sneezes his nose right off! His real voice sounds like a French donkey with a sore throat. The name "Gorf" is "Frog" spelled backwards.
Mrs. Drazil, the Journal Keeper
Mrs. Drazil is another substitute teacher. She carries a special blue journal with her everywhere. In this journal, she writes down notes about all the students who have ever caused trouble in her classes. She has been teaching for many years, so her journal is very full!
Mrs. Drazil is kind to the students at Wayside School. However, she is not so nice to her former students, including a character named Louis. Her last name, "Drazil," is "Lizard" spelled backwards.
Ms. Wendy Nogard, the Thought Reader
Ms. Wendy Nogard is a very unique substitute teacher. She has a special ear on top of her head that can hear people's thoughts! At first, she is very unhappy because she broke up with her boyfriend. This makes her want to make everyone else's life miserable too.
However, things change for Ms. Nogard. She listens to the thoughts of Mrs. Jewls' new baby. Hearing the baby's pure thoughts makes her feel much better. She has a change of heart and becomes much kinder. She also falls in love with Louis and shows everyone her special third ear. Louis tells her he loves her too, saying she doesn't need to read his thoughts because he shows it in his eyes. Her last name, "Nogard," is "Dragon" spelled backwards.
