Weaver & Devore Trading facts for kids
Weaver & Devore Trading is a special family-run store in Yellowknife, Northwest Territories, Canada. It's like an old-fashioned general store, selling many different things.
This store started way back in 1936. Two friends, Harry Weaver and Ellis "Bud" Devore, created it. They were fur traders and knew a lot about boats. They came from a place called Peace River, Alberta.
How Weaver & Devore Started
In 1936, Harry and Bud made their first trip to Yellowknife Bay. Many people were coming to Yellowknife because of new mining work. The next year, in 1937, the partners built a strong log-cabin store. Yellowknife was growing fast, and their business did very well!
Changes Over the Years
Bud Devore decided to leave the business in 1954. But the store kept its original name, Weaver & Devore. Harry Weaver passed away in 1957, but his family continued to run the store. It has stayed in the Weaver family ever since!
The store used to trade furs, but they stopped doing that in the 1980s. Now, Weaver & Devore sells all sorts of general goods. You can find fresh food, outdoor clothes, and they even help people in remote areas get supplies. These are called "bush orders."
The Store's Location Today
In the 1960s, the store moved to a bigger building. It's on the other side of Weaver Drive. The very first Weaver & Devore store from 1937 is still there! It's now a well-known local restaurant called Bullock's Bistro. The city of Yellowknife has even made it a special historical site.
