The Webster Memorial Building is a special old building located at 36 Trumbull Street in Hartford, Connecticut. It was built a long time ago, in 1870. Later, in 1924, it got a big makeover. This building is a cool example of a style called Georgian Revival architecture. It's also important because it was once home to the Family Services Society, a famous local group that helps people. Today, other businesses use the building. In 1982, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places. This means it's recognized as a very important historical site.

About the Building's Look

The Webster Memorial Building stands on a corner in downtown Hartford. It is a three-story building made of brick. The roof is flat, and it has a fancy wooden trim at the top. The front of the building has five sections with windows. Most windows are rectangular. They have stone sills and tops.

The main entrance is set back in the middle. It has a special porch with two pairs of tall, fancy columns. These columns hold up a carved stone band. The building's name is carved into this band. Above that is another decorative trim. There are also two urns, which are like large decorative vases. The window above the entrance is also special. It has decorative pillars on its sides. A broken arch shape sits above this window.

A Look Back at Its History

The Webster Memorial Building was first built in 1870. It started as a private apartment building with three homes inside. Back then, it looked different. It was designed in a popular style called Italianate. This style often included decorative brackets under the roof.

In 1925, a group called the Charity Organization Society bought the building. This group was founded in 1890. It was a kind of charity that helped people in need. The money to buy the building came from a gift. It was from a local insurance executive named John Webster.

The society decided to change the building for their own use. They hired a local architecture firm called Allen and Collins. This firm was known for their work on the Hartford Seminary. They are the ones who gave the building its current look. The Charity Organization Society is now known as the Family Services Society. This group has been a leader in helping people in Hartford for a long time. They have worked with many other local charities.
