The Weir Engine House is a really old and important fire station in Taunton, Massachusetts. It's located at 530 Weir Street. This building was built way back in 1889! Because it's so old and special, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1984. This means it's recognized as a historic landmark.

The building was designed by Abner Coleman, who was Taunton's second fire chief. It was built by a contractor named James T. Bassett.

What is the Weir Engine House?

The Weir Engine House is a historic fire station. It is still used today by the Taunton Fire Department. It's one of two stations in the city that Chief Abner Coleman designed. The other one is the Whittenton Fire and Police Station.

Building's Design and History

The Weir Engine House is a brick building with 2 and a half stories. It has a part that sticks out at the back and a tall tower for drying fire hoses. The roof is shaped like a hip, with a large gabled section at the front.

The station has three big openings for fire trucks. These openings have special arched stone pieces above them. Above the two outer openings, there are single windows. The middle section on the second floor has three windows grouped together. Above these, in the gable, are three smaller windows with decorative wooden shingles. The design of this building is very similar to the Whittenton Station, which was built around the same time.

What Happens Inside?

Today, the Weir Engine House is home to the city's Engine 3 fire truck. It also has a police precinct for the Weir area and a community police office. In the past, this station even had a neighborhood library inside!

The Weir Engine House is one of four fire stations from the 1800s that are still used by the Taunton Fire Department. The other old stations still in use are Central, Whittenton, and East Taunton.
