The Weizer Building was an old building in Cleveland, Ohio. It was built in 1913 in an area where many people from Hungary lived. This building was important enough to be called a historic site in the 1980s. But today, it's gone.

History of the Weizer Building

The area around Buckeye Road in Cleveland was home to many Hungarian immigrants by the late 1800s. Their community was very strong. A big part of their community life was centered around St. Elizabeth of Hungary Catholic Church. This church was the first Hungarian church of its kind in the United States.

The Weizer Building was built in 1913. A skilled local architect named Emile Uhlrich designed it. Like the church, the Weizer Building became a place for Hungarian cultural events. It was a true community center.

However, this special neighborhood changed over time. Many people from the Buckeye-Shaker area fought in World War II. After the war, many moved to the suburbs. This trend continued in the 1960s. By 1990, fewer than a thousand people born in Hungary still lived in Cleveland.

Building Design and Look

The Weizer Building was made of brick and wood siding. It had a strong brick foundation and a roof covered with tiles. You could also see metal and terra cotta (a type of baked clay) on the outside.

The building was three stories tall. It had a unique front with three sections. These sections were made of brick with stone blocks at the corners. The metal and terra cotta parts made it look even more special.

Right at the top of the front, there was a clock in the middle. On each side of the clock, there were small towers. These towers sat on top of large bay windows. These bay windows were on the second and third floors. The first floor did not have bay windows, which made the storefronts stick out a bit. The tile roofs on the towers looked a bit like bell towers. There were also many small windows made of pressed metal right under these roofs.

Why It Was a Historic Site

In 1988, the Weizer Building was added to the National Register of Historic Places. This means it was recognized as an important historical place. It qualified because of its unique design and its important role in the neighborhood's history.

Later, in 2002, another building called the Weizer Building, located further east on Buckeye Road, also became a historic site.

Even though the original Weizer Building was important enough to be listed as historic, it was torn down by 2007. Now, the spot where it once stood is covered with grass and trees.
