Wenallt Hill

Wenallt Hill, often called The Wenallt, is a lovely place found in Cardiff, Wales. Its name comes from the Welsh language and means 'white wooded slope'. Even though some people in Cardiff might call it a mountain, it's actually too low to be officially known as one.

Wenallt Hill belongs to the Cardiff County Council. This means it's public land, open for everyone to enjoy! From the hill, you can look down onto the village of Rhiwbina, which is in the northern part of Cardiff.

Exploring Wenallt Hill

Wenallt Hill is a great spot for outdoor activities and offers amazing views. It's a popular place for walking, exploring nature, and enjoying the fresh air.

At the very top of Wenallt Hill, you'll find a large telecommunications tower. This tower helps send phone signals and internet connections to many homes and businesses. Close to the tower, there's also an old military bunker.

A Look Back in Time

On the southern slopes of Wenallt Hill, you can find the remains of something called Wenallt Camp. This was an ancient enclosure from the British Iron Age. The Iron Age was a time long ago when people used iron to make tools and weapons. These remains give us a peek into how people lived many centuries ago!

Views from Wenallt Hill

Wenallt Hill offers fantastic views. You can see it from most of the Cardiff city centre, especially when you look towards the west, where Garth Hill is also visible. On a clear day, if you look across the Bristol Channel, you might even be able to see Weston-super-Mare in England! That's about 18 miles away!

The side of the hill that faces Cardiff is now covered in trees. However, back in the early 1970s, this same slope was covered in ferns and bracken, with many paths winding through them. If you visit in May, you'll be treated to a beautiful sight: the woods are filled with bright bluebells! These lovely flowers, scientifically known as Hyacinthoides non-scripta, create a stunning blue carpet across the forest floor.
