Werrington Lake is a special man-made lake in Werrington, New South Wales, Australia. It was built in the early 1980s to help stop flooding from Werrington Creek. You can find it inside the Werrington Lake Reserve, right between the areas of Werrington and Werrington County.

Building Werrington Lake
The idea for Werrington Lake came about to solve a problem: flooding from Werrington Creek. Work started in 1981 when earth was removed from the area. This earth was then used to build an overpass for the railway line near Werrington railway station.
Building the lake itself began in 1982. This first part of the project cost about $225,000. After that, three more stages of construction followed, starting in 1984. These later stages cost more than $500,000.
The Penrith City Council helped make the area great for everyone. They built walkways, bridges, and places to fish or relax by the water. They also added playgrounds and planted many trees and plants to make the area beautiful.
Why Werrington Lake is Important
Werrington Lake does many important jobs. It acts like a natural filter, cleaning stormwater before it flows into Werrington Creek. This helps keep the creek healthy. The lake's water is also used to water the nearby cricket ground and other park areas.
The lake is a wonderful place for nature and learning. Many different kinds of native birds have made it their home. Students often visit the lake to study wetlands and learn about how to protect water. It's also a popular spot for families to have picnics and for people who enjoy sports.
Protecting the Lake
Over the years, people have worked hard to keep Werrington Lake healthy. In 2001, the Penrith City Council, the Department of Land & Water Conservation, and a local group called Werrington Landcare started a program. Their goal was to help bring the area back to life and fix any problems that had come up.
In 2005, some fish, like bass, carp, mullet, and eels, were found dead in the lake. It was thought that a type of chemical used to control insects might have caused this. This event showed how important it is to protect the lake from pollution.
