Werrington's Past: A Look at Its History

First People: The Aboriginal Culture

Before European settlers arrived, the land where Werrington now stands was home to the Gomerrigal-Tongarra people. They spoke the Darug language. These people lived by hunting animals and gathering plants for food. They followed their traditional laws, which came from their beliefs about the Dreamtime. Their homes were simple huts made of bark, called 'gunyahs'. They hunted animals like kangaroos and emus. They also collected yams, berries, and other native plants to eat.

European Settlers Arrive

The first piece of land in this area was given out in 1806. It went to Mary King, who was the youngest daughter of Governor Philip Gidley King. Mary didn't actually take control of the land until 1827. This was after she married Robert Copeland Lethbridge.

They built a house and named it Werrington. They farmed the land around their home until Robert Lethbridge passed away in 1865. The names Lethbridge Street and Lethbridge Avenue still remind us of this family today.

The original Werrington house is still standing on Rugby Street. From 1860 to 1872, it was rented by Henry Parkes. He later became the premier of New South Wales. Henry Parkes helped build a private train platform nearby. In 1878, this platform opened to the public as Parkes Platform. It was renamed Werrington in 1893. The railway station became the center around which the town of Werrington grew. The Werrington estate was sold and divided into smaller pieces of land starting in the 1880s. The Werrington Post Office first opened its doors on October 1, 1891.
