History of Wesley Chapel

When Was Wesley Chapel Built?

Wesley Chapel first opened its doors in 1862. It was designed by two architects, Henry Francis Lockwood and William Mawson. The front of the building has a special style. It uses six tall, fancy columns, like those found in ancient Greek or Roman buildings. This style is called Hexastyle Corinthian.

Important Events at the Chapel

In 1889, a very large funeral took place here. It was for a person named George Dawson. Many people wanted to say goodbye to him. Wesley Chapel was chosen because it was big enough to hold all the mourners.

The Chapel's Organ

Early Organs at Wesley Chapel

When the church first opened, it had a large pipe organ. This organ was built in 1877 by Forster and Andrews. It had three keyboards, called manuals. This allowed the organist to play many different sounds.

New Organ Installed

Later, in 1912, a new organ was put in. This one was made by James Jepson Binns. It replaced the older organ. Organs are very important for music in churches.
