Wesley Isaac Howard (born February 1, 1892 – died 1962) was a very talented musician. He was a skilled violinist and a professor. From 1921 to 1927, he led the violin and ensemble departments at the Howard University Conservatory of Music. This means he taught students how to play the violin and how to play music together in groups.

Early Life and Education

Wesley Howard was born in Springfield, Ohio. When he was six years old, his family moved to Richmond, Indiana. He loved music from a young age.

He went to the New England Conservatory of Music. This is a famous music school. He finished his studies there in 1916. After that, he served in World War One. He was an assistant band leader in the 809th Pioneer Infantry.

In 1921, Wesley went to study music in another country. He studied at the École Normale de Musique de Paris. There, he received a special award. It was a certificate of commendation from a famous musician named Maurice Hayot.

A Talented Musician and Teacher

Wesley Howard played the violin for many years. He was part of two different symphony orchestras. These orchestras were made up of white musicians. He also managed the orchestra at the Hampton Institute.

In 1927, he won a special award. It was called the Wanamaker Music Contest prize. He also performed with a very famous singer, Roland Hayes, for several years.

Wesley Howard got married in 1920. His wife's name was Harriet Nelson.
