The Wesleyan Methodist Church in Hugh Town, located on the Isles of Scilly, was an important church building. It was first built in 1790. This church belonged to the Wesleyan Methodist Christian group. Today, the building is no longer a church. It is now used as an office for the Council of the Isles of Scilly. The building is also a Grade II listed site, which means it is a special historical building.

History of the Church Building

The very first church building on this spot was put up in 1790. However, it was replaced by the building you see today in 1828. This means the current building is almost 200 years old!

Changes and Updates Over Time

The church building was updated and improved several times.

  • 1884 Renovation: In 1884, the church got a big makeover. The main seating area was changed, and a special platform called a rostrum was added. A communion rail was also put in. The front of the gallery, which is like a balcony inside the church, was painted white with gold details. A new school room was also added. All these improvements cost about £500.
  • 1905 Renovation: The church was updated again in 1905.

Joining Together and Moving On

In the 1930s, something important happened. This Wesleyan Methodist church joined with another Christian group called the Bible Christians. They decided to use a newer, bigger building on Church Street for their worship services. Because of this, the old Wesleyan Methodist Church building was no longer used for church activities and became empty. The rostrum and communion rail from the old church were carefully moved and installed in the new Church Street chapel.

Music in the Church

Music was always a part of the church services.

  • Early Music: In the beginning, music was played using instruments like a flute, a bass viol (which is like a large cello), and a clarionet (an old type of clarinet).
  • Later Instruments: Later, a harmonium was used. A harmonium is a keyboard instrument that makes sound using air pumped through reeds.
  • Pipe Organ Installation: In 1905, the church got a much bigger and more impressive instrument: a pipe organ. This organ was made by a company called Messrs Heard from Truro.
