Westmount Shopping Centre, also known as Westmount Mall, is a shopping center in London, Ontario. You can find it at 785 Wonderland Road South. It's located right where Wonderland Road and Viscount Road meet.
How It Started
Westmount Mall first opened its doors in 1971. Back then, it had 15 stores. A grocery store called Dominion was the main big store, also known as an "anchor" store.
In 1973, the mall got much bigger. About 50 more stores were added. A store called Horizon became the new main anchor. At that time, it was the largest mall in all of southwestern Ontario!
Later, in 1978, the Horizon store closed. It was then changed into an Eaton's department store.
Growing Bigger
The mall was completely rebuilt between 1987 and 1989. It became a two-story mall with parking underground. It also had over 160 different stores.
By 1999, the Eaton's store closed down. This happened because the company went out of business. A new store, Sears, then took its place.
In the early 2000s, a bus stop was added near the mall. The London Transit Commission made it easier for people to get there. Several bus routes stopped right at the mall.
Tough Times
Around the early 2000s, Westmount Mall started to have some problems. Many stores began to leave the mall. About 40 stores slowly closed their doors. This meant there were more empty spaces inside.
What's Next?
In 2018, the Sears department store at Westmount Mall closed. After that, a company from Toronto bought the mall. They paid $31.5 million for it.
This company, KingSett Capital, plans to give the mall a new look. They also want to bring in new main stores. They are thinking about adding other types of buildings too.
In September 2018, there was an exciting announcement. The space where a store called Target used to be will change. It will become a "Fit 4 Less" gym, which is part of GoodLife Fitness. There will also be new office spaces there.
