The West Congregational Church of Taunton is a very old and important building in Taunton, Massachusetts. It was built way back in 1792. This makes it the oldest church building in the city!
The church is a great example of a style called Federal architecture. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1984. This means it's a special place that is protected because of its history.
What Does the Church Look Like?
The West Congregational Church is in the Westville part of Taunton. You can find it at the corner of Winthrop and North Walker Streets.
It's a one-story building made of wood. It has a pointed roof and walls covered with clapboard siding. The front of the church faces east. It has a special entrance area that sticks out. On top of this entrance is a square tower. This tower has an eight-sided belfry, which is where bells would be. On top of that is a small dome called a cupola. The main door has decorative columns on the sides and a fancy top.
A Church with a Journey
The West Congregational Society was formed in 1792. These were people who wanted to start their own church, separate from the First Parish Church. They built this church building in a different area called Oakland village.
But the church didn't stay there! In 1824, the building was carefully taken apart. Then, it was moved piece by piece to its current spot. This land was bought from a person named John West. It's amazing to think that such a big building was moved almost 200 years ago!
Today, the West Congregational Church is still standing strong. It reminds us of the history of Taunton and the people who lived there long ago.
