The Whistler House Museum of Art is a special place in Lowell, Massachusetts. It's famous because it's the house where a well-known artist named James McNeill Whistler was born. Today, it's a museum where you can see beautiful artworks from their collection. They also show new art by local artists. You can find it at 243 Worthen Street in Lowell.

A House with History

This house was built a long time ago in 1823. It was made for the manager of a company called the Locks and Canals Company. The first person to live there was an inventor named Paul Moody.

Later, in 1834, another important person moved in: George Washington Whistler. He was an engineer. His son, James Whistler, who would become a famous painter, was born right here in 1834.

After George Washington Whistler moved to Russia in 1837, another engineer named James B. Francis lived in the house. He and his wife, Sarah, raised their six children here.

In 1907, a group called the Lowell Art Association bought the house. They opened it as a museum in 1908, so everyone could visit and learn about art and history.

What You Can See at the Museum

When you visit the Whistler House Museum of Art, you can explore different parts of the house.

Art Collections and Galleries

The first and second floors of the museum hold the main art collection. One room is especially for the amazing etchings (a type of printmaking) made by James McNeill Whistler.

In the back of the house, there's a place called the Parker Gallery. This is where the museum shows new art exhibits. These exhibits often feature works by artists who are members of the museum.

Artist Studio

The very top floor of the house is a working artist studio. This means artists can use this space to create their own art!

Some of the artworks you might see include:
