Whole Grain Stamps

The Whole Grain Stamp is a special symbol you might see on food packages. It was created in January 2005 by the Whole Grains Council to help you easily find foods that have a good amount of whole grains. The stamp looks like a golden-yellow picture with a black border and shows a stylized sheaf of grain. It helps you know if a food is a healthy choice!

What is the Whole Grain Stamp?

This stamp helps you choose healthier foods. When you see it, you know the product contains whole grains. Whole grains are important for your body.

Two Kinds of Whole Grain Stamps

There are two main types of Whole Grain Stamps:

The Basic Whole Grain Stamp

If a product has the "Basic Stamp," it means each serving has at least 8 grams of whole grain. This is like half of a recommended serving of whole grains.

The 100% Whole Grain Stamp

Products with the "100% Whole Grain Stamp" are even better. They contain at least 16 grams of whole grain per serving. This is a full recommended serving. These products also do not contain any refined grains. The U.S. Department of Agriculture helps set these serving guidelines.

Why Are Whole Grains Important?

Eating whole grains is good for your health. In 2005, health experts suggested that everyone over age 9 should eat at least three servings of whole grains every day.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) also agrees that whole grains are healthy. In 1999, they said that foods rich in whole grains may help lower the risk of heart disease. This is especially true when these foods are part of a diet low in unhealthy fats and cholesterol.
