Wiglaf facts for kids
Wiglaf is an important character in the old epic poem called Beowulf. He was a young warrior whose father had died. Wiglaf joined the group of brave fighters who followed King Beowulf. He became a very loyal friend to the king.

Wiglaf and the Dragon Battle
When King Beowulf was older, a dangerous dragon attacked his kingdom. Beowulf went to fight the dragon, but his warriors were scared. They ran away, leaving the king to fight alone. Only Wiglaf stayed by Beowulf's side.
Beowulf was badly hurt during the fight. He could not move well. Wiglaf bravely helped him. He fought alongside the king. Together, they managed to defeat the dragon. Wiglaf cut the dragon with his sword. The dragon finally died.
Beowulf's Last Request
King Beowulf was very badly injured from the battle. He knew he was going to die. He asked Wiglaf to bring him the dragon's treasure. Wiglaf went into the dragon's cave and brought back some of the gold and jewels.
With his last words, Beowulf chose Wiglaf to be the next king. Beowulf had no children of his own. All of his family members had passed away. So, Wiglaf became the new ruler of the Geats.
Wiglaf Becomes King
After Beowulf died, his body was burned in a special funeral. This was a common custom in Norse traditions. Wiglaf then took on the important role of leading the kingdom. He ruled the Geats after the brave King Beowulf.
