Wijilawarrim, also known as Molly Springs, is a small Aboriginal community. It is located near the town of Kununurra in the Kimberley region. This area is in Western Australia, within the Shire of Wyndham-East Kimberley.
Understanding Native Title
The Miriuwung Gajerrong people are the traditional owners of the land around Wijilawarrim. They signed an important agreement called the Ord Final Agreement. This agreement helps create partnerships between the Miriuwung Gajerrong people, the Western Australian State Government, and local businesses. The goal is to benefit everyone in the East Kimberley region.
How the Community is Governed
The Yawoorroong Miriuwung Gajerrong Yirrgeb Noong Dawang Aboriginal Corporation, often called MG Corp, helps manage the community. MG Corp works for all Miriuwung Gajerrong native title holders. They make sure that the rules of the Ord Final Agreement are followed, especially those about community living areas.
MG Corp was officially started in 2006 under a special law for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander corporations. Its rules were updated in 2008 to help it work even better.
Planning for the Community's Future
Wijilawarrim has a special plan called Layout Plan No.1. This plan helps guide how the community will grow and develop. It follows rules set by State Planning Policy 3.2 for Aboriginal Settlements. The community members approved Layout Plan No.1 on November 16, 2010. The Western Australian Planning Commission also approved it on September 29, 2010.
