Will Gould (born in 1911, died in 1984) was an American artist who drew comic strips. He is most famous for creating a popular comic called Red Barry.

Will Gould: Creator of Red Barry

The Red Barry comic strip began on Monday, March 19, 1934. It was given out by a company called King Features Syndicate. This comic was about a brave undercover police officer named Red Barry. It was one of several new comics made to compete with another popular strip, Dick Tracy, created by Chester Gould (who was not related to Will Gould). A comics expert named Rick Marschall said Red Barry was "one of the most unique strips of all time."

Will Gould's Early Work

Will Gould started his career in 1929 as a sports cartoonist. He drew for a newspaper called the Bronx Home News. There, he also created a comic strip called Felix O'Fan. Later, for the New York Graphic newspaper, he made another comic called Asparagus Tipps.

In 1930, Gould moved to California. He worked for different companies that distributed comics before he created Red Barry. He wrote and drew Red Barry himself from 1934 to 1938. Will Gould drew Red Barry with a very clear and neat style. His helper on the comic strip was Walter Frehm.

Why Red Barry Ended

The Red Barry comic strip stopped in 1939. This happened because of problems with the agreement between Will Gould and King Features Syndicate.
