Who Was William Bell?
William Bell was a religious leader. He lived in Scotland during the 17th century. He was known for preaching outside. This was a time when the government had strict rules about religious meetings.
Preaching Outdoors
On September 4, 1676, William Bell was preaching. He was at a place called Pentland. He was arrested while he was speaking. Many people who were listening were also arrested.
They were taken to Edinburgh. Another person named Robert Dick was with them. Some people tried to help them escape. But the attempt did not work. Everyone arrested was sent to prison.
The Law Against Field Preaching
William Bell was charged with a crime. He was accused of preaching without permission. At that time, there was a law from 1670. It said that no one could preach or pray outdoors. It also applied to large meetings in houses. If too many people were inside, and some were outside, it was against the law. These meetings were called "conventicles."
Breaking this law could lead to serious punishment. People could be imprisoned. They could also lose their belongings.
Imprisonment and Release
On October 12, 1676, William Bell was sent to Bass Rock. This was a famous prison on an island. It is located in the Firth of Forth. Robert Dick was also sent there.
William Bell stayed on Bass Rock for almost three years. He was finally set free on July 19, 1679.
Later Imprisonment
After his release, William Bell continued to preach. Records show he led meetings. These meetings were held in a town barn. This was in Innerkeithing. He preached there from September 1679 to April 1680.
Because he continued to preach at these meetings, he was arrested again. He was then put in Blackness Castle.
