William Bower Dawes started his career as a farmer. He lived and worked in the Nairne district of South Australia. He was a hard worker and became well-known in the area.

Later, he teamed up with Samuel Stocks junior. Together, they opened the very first flour mill in the Nairne district. A flour mill grinds grain, like wheat, into flour. This was a vital business for the community.

Dawes was also very involved in the local farming community. He was active in the Mount Barker Agricultural Society. He even served as their president for at least one year. This shows he was a respected leader among farmers.

A Role in Government

In 1853, the District Council of Nairne was formed. William Dawes was chosen as one of the first councillors. A council helps manage local areas, like roads and services.

In March 1857, he took on an even bigger role. He became a Member of the House of Assembly. This was like being a representative in the government. He represented the area called Onkaparinga. He worked alongside another important person, who later became Sir William Milne.

However, William Dawes' time in the House of Assembly was short. He resigned in November 1857. This was because he faced some financial difficulties with his businesses.

New Challenges and Business

After leaving politics, William Dawes looked for new opportunities. He took a job as a manager at a mine in Kanmantoo. He worked very hard and carefully in this new role.

Later, he tried his hand at mining again. He explored for minerals at Karkarilla, which is near Moonta on the Yorke Peninsula. He was always looking for ways to succeed in business.

Towards the end of his life, he became active on the Stock Exchange. This is a place where people buy and sell shares in companies. While he was active, he didn't become extremely wealthy from it.

William Bower Dawes was a person who tried many different things. He was a farmer, a businessman, and a politician. He played a part in the early development of South Australia.
