Opened in 1996, The Breman is the biggest museum of its kind in the southeastern United States. You can find it in Midtown, near the Center for Puppetry Arts. The museum is named after William Breman, a businessman from Atlanta who cared a lot about the Jewish community.

Exploring Museum Exhibitions

The Breman Museum has many different exhibitions. Some are always there, and others travel to the museum for a short time. These exhibits help visitors learn about Jewish values, customs, and traditions.

Permanent and Traveling Exhibits

Through films, music, and visual art, the exhibits explore big ideas. These ideas include personal responsibility, building strong communities, and understanding different cultures.

The museum's main exhibit is called Absence of Humanity: The Holocaust Years, 1933-1945. This exhibit teaches about the difficult period of the Holocaust.

Past Exhibitions to Discover

In the past, the museum has shown exciting exhibits. One featured the words and pictures of Maurice Sendak, who wrote Where the Wild Things Are. Another explored the "Golden Age of Comic Books" from 1938 to 1950. There was also a story about the famous Rich's department store, called "Return to Rich's: The Story Behind The Store."

Researching Jewish History

The Breman Museum is also home to important collections for research. These include the Ida Pearle and Joseph Cuba Archives for Southern Jewish History. There are also the Savannah Jewish Archives and a Genealogy center.

Documenting Jewish Life in the Southeast

These collections help document the history of Jewish life in Georgia and the entire Southeast. They contain personal stories and historical items. The museum has a large exhibit about the challenges Jewish people faced. This includes their struggles in Poland, Germany, Czechoslovakia, and Greece during the Holocaust.

Stories of Holocaust Survivors

The museum also shares stories of how Holocaust survivors came to the Southeast. They built new lives for themselves after the war. You can also listen to interviews with Holocaust survivors, where they share their experiences.
