William Brydges (born around 1552, died 1602) was an important English noble and politician. He was known as the 4th Baron Chandos.

William was the younger son of Edmund Brydges, who was the 2nd Baron Chandos. His mother was Dorothy Bray. She was the youngest child of Sir Edmund Braye.

Early Life and Family Connections

For a while, William lived a less public life. This was common for younger sons in noble families. He inherited most of his family's lands and wealth. This happened after his older brother, Giles, passed away. These lands were in Gloucestershire, Wiltshire, and Worcestershire.

William also served in the English Parliament. He represented the town of Cricklade. His family had a special role in this town. He also represented Gloucestershire twice. His brother's power helped him get elected for these seats.

Serving His Country

In 1588, England faced a big threat. The Spanish Armada, a huge fleet of ships, planned to invade. William Brydges became a leader (captain) of a group of soldiers. These soldiers were from Gloucestershire. They were part of Queen Elizabeth I's army. They were ready to fight the invasion.

After his older brother died, William became the Baron Chandos. He also served as the Queen's main representative in Gloucestershire. This role was called the Lord Lieutenant. He continued to be a Member of Parliament for Cricklade.

His Own Family

William Brydges married Mary Hopton. She was the daughter of Sir Owen Hopton. Mary passed away in 1624.

William and Mary had several children:

  • Grey Brydges, who became his heir.
  • Beatrix Brydges (died 1602). She married Sir Henry Poole.
  • Frances Brydges. She married Sir Thomas Smith first. Later, she married Thomas Cecil, who became the 1st Earl of Exeter.
  • Joan or Eleanor Brydges (died 1616). She married Sir Ambrose or Sir Thomas Turville. He was a cupbearer to Anne of Denmark.
