William Busac facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

William Busac (born around 1020, died 1076) was an important person in medieval France. He was known as the Count of Eu and later became the Count of Soissons. His nickname "Busac" was given to him by a writer from that time, Robert of Torigni.

William Busac's Early Life

William was the son of William I, who was the Count of Eu. His mother's name was Lesceline. The County of Eu was a region in what is now France.

Becoming Count of Soissons

William Busac wanted to become more powerful. He asked King Henry I of France for help. The King agreed and arranged for William to marry a woman named Adelaide. Adelaide was the heiress, meaning she was the rightful owner, of the County of Soissons.

Adelaide was the daughter of Renaud I, who was also the Count of Soissons. Because William married Adelaide, he became the Count of Soissons "in right of his wife." This means he got the title because his wife was the rightful owner.

William's Family

William and Adelaide had five children together. They were:

  • Renaud II, who later became the Count of Soissons. He died in 1099.
  • John I, who also became the Count of Soissons after his brother. He was married to Aveline de Pierrefonds.
  • Manasses of Soissons, who became a Bishop. He was a Bishop in Cambrai and Soissons. He died in 1108.
  • Lithuise de Blois, who married a man named Milo I of Montlhéry.
  • Raintrude, who married Raoul I of Nesle. The Nesle family was a well-known noble family.

After William Busac passed away, his son Renaud became the Count of Soissons. Later, Renaud's brother John took over the title.
