William Archibald Cadell (1708–1777) was an important Scottish businessman. He lived in a town called Cockenzie. He was one of the first people to help start the Industrial Revolution in the area around the Firth of Forth.
His family were merchants. This means they bought and sold goods. They often brought iron from countries like Russia and Sweden into Scotland.
Founding Carron Iron Works
William Cadell and his son, also named William, helped start a very important factory. This factory was called the Carron Iron Works. They started it in 1759 with two other people, Samuel Garbett and John Roebuck.
At first, the company was known as Roebuck, Garbett & Cadells. This factory made a lot of iron products. It was a big part of the Industrial Revolution in Scotland.
Cadell Family Connections
William Cadell's daughter, Christian Cadell, married a man named Thomas Edington. Thomas Edington later owned part of another iron factory. This factory was called Cramond Iron Works.
Later, Thomas Edington started his own company in Glasgow in 1797. It was called Thomas Edington & Son. Christian and Thomas had a grandson who became a famous geologist. His name was Thomas Edington (1814-1859).
William Cadell also had a great-great-grandson named Henry Cadell. Henry Cadell was also a geologist, studying rocks and the Earth.
