William Clayton was born sometime after 1650. His family lived near a town called Preston in Lancashire, England. He grew up in a time when England was changing a lot, especially in trade and politics.

Early Life and Business

William followed his uncle, Thomas Clayton, to Liverpool. This city was a busy port and a great place for trade. William became a very successful merchant. He traded in goods like tobacco and sugar, which were important products at that time.

Serving the City: Mayor and Alderman

William Clayton was not just a businessman; he was also involved in his community. From 1685, he served as a common councillor. A common councillor helped make decisions for the city.

In 1689, he was chosen to be the Mayor of Liverpool. The Mayor is the main leader of a city. He served in this important role for a year, until 1690. After being Mayor, he became an alderman. An alderman was also a senior member of the city's government.

A Voice in Parliament

William Clayton also became a Member of Parliament (MP). An MP is a person elected to represent their area in the country's main government, called Parliament. He represented Liverpool in the English Parliament from 1698 to 1708.

In 1707, something big happened: England and Scotland joined together. This was called the Acts of Union. After this, a new Parliament was formed for Great Britain. William Clayton was again elected to represent Liverpool in this new Parliament. He served as an MP from 1713 until 1715.

Family Life

In 1690, William Clayton married Elizabeth Leigh. She was the daughter of George Leigh from Cheshire. William and Elizabeth had four children: one son and three daughters. William Clayton passed away on 7 July 1715.
