William Foster (born January 12, 1887 – died December 2, 1947) was a British politician. He was a member of the Labour Party. This party is one of the main political groups in the United Kingdom.

Foster became a Member of Parliament (MP) for Wigan. An MP is someone elected to represent a specific area in the country. They work in the House of Commons, which is a key part of the UK's parliament.

Becoming an MP for Wigan

William Foster was first elected as an MP in 1942. This happened during a special election called a by-election. A by-election takes place when an MP leaves their seat before the next general election. In this case, the previous MP for Wigan, John Parkinson, had passed away.

Foster won the by-election and began his work representing the people of Wigan.

Re-election and Later Life

In 1945, there was a general election across the whole country. William Foster was re-elected by the voters of Wigan. This meant he continued to serve as their MP.

Sadly, William Foster died in 1947 when he was 60 years old. He passed away before he could finish his full term in parliament. After his death, another by-election was held in Wigan in 1948. Ronald Williams won this election, keeping the seat for the Labour Party.
