William Fox (pamphleteer) facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

William Fox was a strong supporter of ending slavery in the late 1700s in Britain. He was known as an abolitionist pamphleteer, meaning he wrote and published small books or leaflets to share his ideas.

From 1773 to 1794, William Fox ran a bookshop at 128 Holborn Hill in London. Starting in 1782, he worked with Martha Gurney, who was a printer and a Particular Baptist. Martha Gurney helped print and sell pamphlets written by Fox and others who wanted to end slavery.

Why William Fox Was Special

William Fox had a very strong belief: he wanted slavery to end immediately. This idea was quite unusual for his time. Many people in the 1700s who wanted to stop slavery thought it should happen slowly, step by step. This slow approach was called "gradualism."

Immediate Freedom vs. Slow Change

Most people believed that ending slavery gradually was the best way. They thought it would prevent big problems and allow society to adjust over time. They worried about what would happen if enslaved people were suddenly freed.

However, William Fox believed that slavery was so wrong that it needed to stop right away. He didn't think there should be any delays or slow changes. This idea of "immediatism" was not common back then.

Historians like David Brion Davis have studied this. They explain that most people in the 1700s preferred gradual changes for big social goals. They thought about progress, laws, property, and individual rights in a way that favored slow improvements.

Focusing on the Slave Trade

Many abolitionists at the time focused on stopping the slave trade itself. This meant stopping the ships that brought enslaved people from Africa to other parts of the world. By focusing on the trade, they could avoid the harder question of what life would be like for people after they were freed. This also helped protect the businesses that relied on enslaved labor.

William Fox, however, pushed for the complete and immediate freedom of all enslaved people, which was a very bold idea for his time.
