William Davis Garwood, Jr. (born April 28, 1884 – died December 28, 1950) was an American actor and director. He worked in both theater and films during the early 1900s. He was especially known for his roles in silent films. These were movies made before sound was added.
William Garwood starred in many popular films between 1911 and 1913. Some of these were early movie versions of famous stories. These included Jane Eyre, Lorna Doone, and David Copperfield. He also appeared in The Merchant of Venice and Robin Hood. In total, he acted in over 150 short and full-length movies.

Early Life of William Garwood
William Davis Garwood, Jr. was born in Springfield, Missouri. He went to public schools there. When he was 15, he moved to New Mexico.
William Garwood's Acting Career
William Garwood started his film career with American Studios. After eight months, he joined Universal Film Manufacturing Company in 1914. His first movie for Universal was On Dangerous Ground. It was released in 1915.
By this time, William Garwood was very popular. He became a leading actor, especially with female fans. He often worked with another popular actress, Violet Mersereau. They starred together in many short comedy films. Some of these were You Can't Always Tell, Destiny's Trump Card, and The Adventure of the Yellow Curl Papers.
While at Universal, Garwood also played the main character in Lord John in New York. This film is now considered lost, meaning copies no longer exist. The movie was based on a popular story. Audiences loved it, so Garwood made four more "Lord John" films.
Later Years and Death
By the late 1910s, William Garwood's acting career began to slow down. His last movie was A Proxy Husband in 1919. He also directed this film. After that, he stopped acting and directing.
William Garwood reportedly lived off the money he had earned from different investments. He never married and did not have any children. On December 28, 1950, he passed away in Los Angeles. He was 66 years old and died from a liver illness.
