William Glegg facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

William Glegg was an important person in his local area who founded the Calday Grange Grammar School in 1636. He wanted young people to get a good education. To help the school, he gave 15 acres (61,000 m2) of land. This land provided money, about £12 each year, to pay the schoolmaster.

Glegg believed strongly in the importance of education. When he started the school, he wrote that it was "very Godly, necessary and virtuous" for young people to learn "virtue, learning, and good order." He hoped this would help them "better know and serve God, and profit their country." He wanted a "free grammar school" to be built in Calday Grange, close to Hinderton, and to last "for evermore."

Founding Calday Grange Grammar School

The official document that started the school, called the Foundation Charter, was signed on October 26, 1636. It said that William Glegg, who lived in Calday Grange, gave land to create a "Free Grammar School." This school was meant for the "good and Christian Institution of boys" in the village of Calday Grange, which was part of West Kirby in Chester.

Today, one of the school houses at Calday Grange Grammar School is named Glegg, in his honor.

William Glegg and the English Civil War

William Glegg lived during a time of big changes in England, including the English Civil War. This was a conflict between those who supported the King and those who supported Parliament. During this war, William Glegg was captured and held as a prisoner in Chester. He was later exchanged for another important person, Sir Nicholas Byron.

Glegg had three sons who fought for Parliament during the war. Sadly, one of his sons, John Glegg, was killed while fighting in Ireland. He was serving as a Sergeant-Major under Colonel Michael Jones.
