William H. Nicholson (1869–1911) was the very first African American firefighter in the New York City Fire Department (NYCFD). He was assigned to Engine Company 6. His job also included working with the horses in the veterinary department, where he fed them and cleaned their stalls.

A Pioneer Firefighter

William H. Nicholson made history by becoming the first African American to join the New York City Fire Department. This was a big step forward at a time when many jobs were not open to everyone. His courage helped open doors for others who came after him.

Early Life and Joining the Fire Department

William H. Nicholson was born in Virginia in 1869. Later, he moved to New York City. Before joining the fire department, he worked as a cement tester.

In 1898, Nicholson joined the New York City Fire Department in Brooklyn. Even though he was a firefighter, he spent a lot of his time working with the fire horses. These horses were very important for pulling the fire engines back then. His duties included feeding them and keeping their stables clean. This shows how different firefighting was in the past!

Later Life and Legacy

Sadly, William H. Nicholson's health became poor, and he had to retire from the fire department in 1911. He passed away just a few weeks later that same year.

Even though his time as a firefighter was challenging, William H. Nicholson's role as the first African American firefighter in New York City is an important part of history. He paved the way for future generations of diverse firefighters.
