Kids Encyclopedia Facts

William Henry Krause (1796-1852) was an important Church of Ireland priest and a very well-known speaker. He was famous for his sermons, which are like religious talks.

Krause was born in 1796 on an island called Saint Croix in the West Indies. He grew up in England and went to school there. When he was 18, he joined the army. He fought in France and was part of the famous Battle of Waterloo in 1815. After getting sick, he left the army and went back to his father in Saint Croix.

In 1822, Krause visited Ireland for a friend's wedding. There, he met and married Angelina Ridgeway. She played a big part in his decision to become a strong follower of evangelical Protestantism, which is a type of Christian faith. Sadly, Angelina died soon after giving birth to their only child, Eliza Angelina Krause.

Becoming a Priest

After trying to become a priest in England without success, Krause moved to Cavan, Ireland. There, he worked for Lord Farnham, who supported evangelical causes.

Krause then studied at Trinity College Dublin, which is a famous university. He earned his first degree in 1830 and later a master's degree. He was officially made a priest by the Bishop of Kilmore and started working as a curate in Cavan. A curate is a priest who helps the main priest in a church.

Chaplain in Dublin

From 1840 until he passed away in 1852, Reverend Krause worked as a chaplain at the Bethesda Chapel, Dublin. A chaplain is a priest who serves a specific group or institution. Many of his sermons were published after he died, showing how important his words were to people. He lived near the church in Dublin.

Many people listened to Krause's sermons and were influenced by his ideas. These included John Pentland Mahaffy, who later became the head of Trinity College, and Reverend Walter Thomas Turpin.

Community Work

Reverend Krause was also a trustee for the North Strand Episcopal Chapel Sunday School and Daily School. This means he helped manage and support these schools, which provided education for children.

Family and Beliefs

Reverend Krause was known for his strong beliefs against Catholicism. He was also a member of the Orange Order, a Protestant organization.

His daughter, Eliza, married a Scottish clergyman named Reverend William J. Pollock. Their son, William Henry Krause Pollock, became a surgeon and was also a very good chess player.
