William Henry Margetson was born in Camberwell, Surrey. This was a part of London. He went to school at Dulwich College. Later, he studied art at important schools. These included the Royal College of Art. He also studied at the Royal Academy of Arts.

In 1885, Margetson showed his art for the first time. This was at the Royal Academy. He also showed his paintings at other places. These included the Royal Society of British Artists. He displayed work at the Royal Institute of Oil Painters too.

Painting Styles and Subjects

Margetson used both oil paints and watercolours. He became well-known for his portraits. These were often of beautiful women. They sometimes had modern hairstyles and hats. He also painted pictures about religion. Some of his art told stories using symbols.

At first, his style was very traditional. It was like the art from the Victorian era. Later, he changed his style. He used looser brushstrokes. He was inspired by artists called Post-impressionists. He also liked the Pre-Raphaelites. A famous artist named Lawrence Alma-Tadema influenced him.

One of his most famous paintings is The Sea Hath its Pearls. He showed this painting in 1897. It was at the Royal Academy. This artwork is now in Australia. You can see it at the Art Gallery of New South Wales.

Margetson painted a portrait of Alfred Tennyson. Tennyson was a very famous poet. This painting is in the National Portrait Gallery in London.

Life as an Illustrator

Besides painting, Margetson also drew pictures for books. He met his wife, Helen Hatton, through art. She was also an artist. They worked on an illustration project together.

He lived and worked in London first. Later, he moved to Blewbury and Wallingford. He passed away in Wallingford, Oxfordshire, in 1940. He was 78 years old.
