Sir William Hody (born before 1441, died 1524) was an important English lawyer, judge, and politician. He lived in a place called Pilsdon in Dorset. Sir William worked for King Henry VII as the top lawyer (Attorney General) and also as a chief judge (Chief Baron of the Exchequer).

Who Was Sir William Hody?

William Hody was born before the year 1441. He was the second son of Sir John Hody, who was also a very important judge. William's sister, Elisabeth Hody, married Sir Robert Strode. They rebuilt their home, Parnham House, starting in 1522.

His Important Jobs

Sir William Hody was a Member of Parliament, which means he helped make laws for the country. He represented the towns of Totnes in 1472 and Bridgwater in 1483.

In 1485, King Henry VII became king. Soon after, William Hody was chosen to be the Attorney General for England and Wales. This was a very important job as the chief lawyer for the king.

Then, in 1486, he became the Chief Baron of the Exchequer. This meant he was a main judge in a special court that dealt with money matters for the king. He worked as a judge until he retired in 1522.

His Family Life

William Hody married Eleanor Malet. Her father was Sir Baldwin Malet, who was also a lawyer for King Henry VIII.

William and Eleanor had two sons and two daughters:

  • Reignold Hody, their oldest son.
  • William Hody of Pilsdon, their second son. He married twice and had children. His daughter, Mary Hody, married Sir Thomas Carew. You can still see special brass memorials for Mary Hody and her husband in Haccombe Church.
  • Joan Hody, who married Sir Richard Warre.
  • Eme Hody, who married Lawrence Wadham.

When Did He Die?

Sir William Hody passed away on June 18, 1524.
