William I, Count of Cerdanya facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

William I Raymond (born in 1068, died in 1095) was an important leader in his time. He was the count of Cerdanya and Berga from when he was born until he passed away. He actually gave up the title of Count of Berga a year earlier to his son, William-Jordan.

William I Raymond was the son of Raymond I of Cerdanya. His father died shortly after he was born. When he was young, he married Sancha, who was the daughter of Ramon Berenguer I, Count of Barcelona. William also became the tutor, or teacher, for his nephew, who would later become a famous leader named Ramon Berenguer III.

William was very interested in helping people move into and settle new parts of his land. He even created a special document, called a charter, for the people of a town called Villafranca. This charter likely gave them certain rights or rules to help their community grow.

In 1094, William gave the region of Berga to his sons. The next year, when he died, his older son, William, inherited Cerdanya.
