William Jackson & Son Limited is a British company that makes and sells food. It is also known as the William Jackson Food Group. This company has been around for a very long time, making many different kinds of food products for people across the United Kingdom.
The Company's History
How It All Started
The company was started by a man named William Jackson. He was born in a place called Elstronwick. In 1851, he opened his very first shop. This shop was located at 28 Scale Lane in Hull. William Jackson began by selling groceries and tea. A grocer is someone who sells food items.
Growing the Business
Over the years, the company grew a lot. They even had a chain of shops called Jacksons Stores. These were like small convenience stores, selling everyday items. By 2004, there were 114 of these stores in the north of England. Later, these stores were sold to another big company called Sainsbury's.
Baking and Yorkshire Puddings
The company opened its first bakery in 1891. This was a big step into making baked goods. The main Jackson's bakery that is still used today opened in 1907. It is on Derringham Street.
A very interesting part of their history involves Yorkshire puddings. In 1968, the company found a way to make lots of Yorkshire puddings for sale. This meant many people could enjoy them easily.
In 1974, a holiday company called Butlin's asked the bakery for help. They wanted a special Yorkshire pudding for their holiday camps. This request led to the creation of a famous brand called Aunt Bessie's. By 2016, Aunt Bessie's was making an amazing 20 million Yorkshire puddings every week! That's a lot of puddings!
New Additions and Changes
The William Jackson Food Group continued to grow by buying other food businesses. In 2012, they bought a company called Abel & Cole. Then, in 2016, they bought The Food Doctor. However, in 2018, they sold the Aunt Bessie's brand to another company called Nomad Foods.
