William Fambrough was born in Little Rock, Arkansas. When he was young, his family moved to Kansas City, Missouri. He went to Lincoln High School and graduated in 1935.

Early Life and Education

After high school, Fambrough studied graphic arts. He attended Lincoln University. This is where he learned skills that would help him in his future career.

Service in World War II

After his studies, Fambrough served in World War II. He spent three years in the military. When the war ended, he returned home.

A Career in Photography

Fambrough then focused on photography. He worked for a weekly magazine called The Call. He also worked as a freelance photographer. This meant he took pictures for many different clients.

From the 1950s to the 1970s, Fambrough captured important moments. He photographed the African American experience in Kansas City. Many of his pictures also appeared in The Kansas City Star newspaper. Sometimes, his photos were not credited with his name.

Fambrough became well-known for his skill. People gave him the nickname "One Shot Fambrough." This meant he was so good, he often got the perfect picture on his first try! His work helps us understand history through images.
