William Legge, the 4th Earl of Dartmouth, was an important British nobleman. He was born on November 29, 1784, and passed away on November 22, 1853. Before he became Earl of Dartmouth, he was known as "The Honourable William Legge" and later "Viscount Lewisham." He was also a member of the Royal Society and the Society of Antiquaries.

About William Legge
His Early Life
William Legge was the son of George Legge, who was the 3rd Earl of Dartmouth. His mother was Lady Frances. She was the daughter of Heneage Finch, the 3rd Earl of Aylesford. William had two younger brothers named Heneage Legge and Arthur Legge.
His Career in Politics
William Legge became a member of the British Parliament in January 1810. He represented an area called Milborne Port. Later that same year, in November, his father passed away. William then became the 4th Earl of Dartmouth. This meant he moved from the House of Commons to the House of Lords. The House of Lords is another part of the British Parliament.
Other Important Roles
William Legge was also involved in important groups. On November 7, 1822, he became a Fellow of the Royal Society. This is a very old and respected group for scientists. He was also a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries. This group studies history and old things.
Just like his father, William Legge was an officer in the Staffordshire Militia. A militia was a group of citizens who could be called upon to help defend their area. In 1812, he was promoted to lead this group as a Colonel. He remained the Colonel of the regiment until he passed away.

Lord Dartmouth was married two times during his life.
First Marriage
His first wife was Lady Frances Charlotte Chetwynd-Talbot. They got married on April 5, 1820. She was the daughter of Charles Chetwynd-Talbot, the 2nd Earl Talbot. William and Frances had one son together:
- William Walter Legge, who became the 5th Earl of Dartmouth. He was born on August 12, 1823.
Sadly, Lady Frances passed away on October 4, 1823.
Second Marriage
Lord Dartmouth married again on October 25, 1828. His second wife was the Honourable Frances Barrington. She was the daughter of Reverend George Barrington, the 5th Viscount Barrington. William and Frances had many children together. They had six sons and nine daughters.

Lord Dartmouth remained a widower after his second wife's death. He passed away in November 1853, when he was 68 years old. His only son from his first marriage, William Walter, became the next Earl of Dartmouth.
