William Lindsay, 18th Earl of Crawford and 2nd Earl of Lindsay (born April 1644 – died 6 March 1698) was an important Scottish noble and politician. He played a big role in Scottish government during his time.

Who Was William Lindsay?

William Lindsay was the oldest son of John Lindsay, who was the 17th Earl of Crawford and 1st Earl of Lindsay. His mother was Lady Christian Hamilton. William took over his father's titles as Earl of Crawford and Earl of Lindsay in 1678.

His Political Life

William Lindsay was a strong supporter of the Presbyterian church, which was a major part of Scottish life back then. He held several important jobs in the government:

  • In 1689, he was the president of the Convention Parliament. This was a special meeting of important people in Scotland who decided how the country should be governed.
  • In 1690, he became a commissioner of the treasury. This meant he helped manage Scotland's money and finances.
  • He also worked as one of the commissioners who helped decide how the Church of Scotland would be run. This was a very important task, as the church had a big influence on daily life.

William Lindsay was married twice.

First Marriage

In 1670, he married Lady Mary Johnstone. She was the daughter of the 1st Earl of Annandale and Hartfell. They had three sons together:

  • John Lindsay, who later became the 19th Earl of Crawford and 3rd Earl of Lindsay.
  • Colonel James Lindsay, who was a soldier and sadly died in 1707 during the Battle of Almansa.
  • Patrick Lindsay, who passed away without having any children.

Second Marriage

Later, William Lindsay married Lady Henrietta Fleming. She was the daughter of Charles Seton, 2nd Earl of Dunfermline. Lady Henrietta was also the widow of the 5th Earl of Wigtown. They had more children together, but their names are not listed here.
