The William Minott House is a special old house located at 45 Park Street in Portland, Maine. It's one of the few homes in Portland built in the Federal style that survived a huge fire in 1866. This house is so important that it was added to the National Register of Historic Places on July 10, 1979.
What Makes the William Minott House Special?
The William Minott House is a great example of Federal architecture. This style was popular in the United States from about 1780 to 1830. It often features simple, balanced designs and classic details.
The house is located in Portland's West End neighborhood. It stands at the corner of Park and Nye Streets.
A Look at the House's Design
The house has three stories and is made of wood. It has a roof that is not very steep, called a hip roof. There are four chimneys, one at each end of the main part of the house.
The outside walls are covered with clapboard siding. The bottom part of the house, called the foundation, is made of granite. A two-story section extends from the back of the house.
The front of the house has five sections, or "bays." The main entrance is in the middle. It has windows on the sides and a half-circle window above the door. On the second floor, right above the entrance, there is a special three-part window.
The House's Story Through Time
The William Minott House was built in 1805 by William Minott. He was a housewright, which means he was a skilled builder of houses. In 1807, he made the house bigger.
He expanded it so that three families could live there, including his two sons' families. The house shows what many homes in Portland looked like before the big fire in 1866.
Even today, the house is still used as a home for multiple families. In 1976, it was in bad shape and almost torn down. Luckily, it was saved and carefully restored to its original beauty.
