The William Park House is a special old house located at 330 Main Street in Sprague, Connecticut. It was built in 1913 and is a great example of a house style called American Foursquare, with cool features from the Craftsman and Bungalow styles.
This house was built for William Park, who owned a big company called the Angus Park Woolen Company. This company was very important for jobs in the area. Because of its history and unique style, the house was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2007.
What Does the House Look Like?
The William Park House sits on about three acres of land in a small mill village called Hanover. It's a two-and-a-half story house made of wood, shaped like a rectangle. It has a porch that wraps all the way around the house and a special covered entrance for cars, called a porte cochere.
The roof is sloped (a hip roof), and it has large windows sticking out from it, called dormers. These dormers have wide sections of windows with different roof shapes. The outside walls are covered in stucco (a type of plaster) and decorative wooden beams. Most of the windows have many small glass panes on the top and one large pane on the bottom. This is a unique detail from the Prairie School style of architecture. Inside, the house still has beautiful wooden details and carved plasterwork, including fancy stair railings and built-in cabinets.
Who Was William Park?
The William Park House was built in 1913 by a skilled builder named Peck McWilliams. He might have even designed the house himself! Houses in the American Foursquare style, especially with clear Prairie School features, are not very common in Connecticut, and this house is a really good example of that style.
William Park was the son of Angus Park, who started the Angus Park Woolen Company. Angus Park began his business in 1899 by buying an old textile mill and making it better. William Park and his son (who was also named Angus) kept the business going until 1970.
