A Look Back: The House's Story
The William Perrin Nicolson House was built in 1891. It was a wedding gift from William Perrin Nicolson to his new wife, Carolyn Crane. A famous architect named Walter T. Downing designed the house. He was known for his unique and creative style, especially in homes.
This house is a great example of the Colonial Revival style. It's one of only a few homes designed by Walter T. Downing that are still standing in Atlanta today. Because of its special design and history, the house was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1977. Later, in 1989, the City of Atlanta also recognized it as a landmark building.
The Nicolson family owned the house until 1982.

For many years, the property was used as a bed and breakfast called the Shellmont Inn. It was a popular place for visitors to stay until 2016.
