Kids Encyclopedia Facts

William Somerville, 2nd Lord Somerville (died August 20, 1456) was an important person in Scotland during the 1400s. He was a member of the Scottish Parliament, which is like the country's main law-making group. He is known as the first person to clearly hold the title of Lord Somerville. He was given this special title in 1445.

William Somerville was the son of Sir Thomas Somerville and Janet Stewart. William married Janet Mowat. Together, they had a son named John Somerville, 3rd Lord Somerville, who later became the 3rd Lord Somerville. William Somerville passed away on August 20, 1456, after eating too much fruit.

His Family and Legacy

William Somerville came from an important family. His father, Thomas, was also a significant figure. When William became Lord Somerville, it meant he had a high rank and influence in Scottish society. His son, John, continued the family's line as the next Lord.

After William's death, his wife, Janet, had a disagreement with their son, John. In 1478, Janet asked the court to help her get back some of her belongings, like silverware, that she believed were hers by right.
