William Stourton became the Baron Stourton in 1535, taking over from his father. He married Elizabeth Dudley. Her father, Edmund Dudley, was a key advisor to King Henry VII. William and Elizabeth had seven sons, including Charles, William, and Arthur. They also had two daughters, one of whom was Ursula.

Family Life and Challenges

William Stourton had a large family. His son Charles later became the 8th Baron Stourton. William had some disagreements with Charles, especially about who would inherit the family's lands and wealth. These disagreements led to legal battles after William passed away.

A Role in Parliament

In 1529, William Stourton became a Member of Parliament for Somerset. This meant he helped make laws for England. However, he found this job quite difficult. At the time, he was also busy managing his family's estates because his father was getting older. He even asked if he and his father could be excused from attending Parliament anymore. William Stourton was known for having traditional religious beliefs.

Military Service and Leadership

William Stourton was a skilled military leader. He helped put down a rebellion known as the Pilgrimage of Grace. This was a large protest against King Henry VIII's changes to the church.

He also fought in battles in Scotland. Later in his life, he spent a lot of time in France. He served with honor as the English Deputy at Newhaven (now Le Havre). This was an important role, showing his leadership abilities in military matters.

His Successor

After William Stourton died in 1548, his oldest son, Charles, became the 8th Baron Stourton.
