William Tagert (1793 – 14 October 1861) was an important Irish surgeon who lived in the 1800s. He is best known for becoming the president of the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland (RCSI) in 1842. The RCSI is a famous medical college in Dublin, Ireland.

Early Life and Training

William Tagert was born in Dublin, Ireland, in 1793. He went to Nutgrove School in Rathfarnham, which is in County Dublin, for his early education.

When he was young, William began his training to become a surgeon. In December 1808, he started learning from a surgeon named Sir Henry Jebb. After Sir Henry Jebb passed away in 1811, William continued his training with another surgeon, Alexander Read.

Becoming a Surgeon

William Tagert worked hard and officially became a qualified surgeon in July 1816. This meant he earned a special title called "Licentiate" from the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland (RCSI). A few years later, in November 1819, he became a full "Member" of the RCSI. This showed he was a respected and experienced surgeon.

Career and Legacy

William Tagert worked as a surgeon at Mercer's Hospital in Dublin. He also taught surgery at the Ledwich School of Medicine. He was known for being a good teacher. When he passed away, he left his collection of books to the Ledwich School of Medicine.

William Tagert died on 14 October 1861, after being ill for a long time. He was buried in Mount Jerome Cemetery. People who knew him said he was a skilled surgeon and a well-liked lecturer.
