Sir William Taylor Money (born in 1769, died in April 1834) was an important English naval captain. He worked for the East India Company, which was a powerful trading company. He also managed the ships for the company in Bombay (now Mumbai, India) and was a Member of Parliament (MP) in the British Parliament. This means he helped make laws for the country.

Who Was William Taylor Money?

William Taylor Money was the oldest son of Captain William Money. His father also worked for the East India Company and was a director, which is like being on the board of directors for a big company. His mother was Martha Taylor.

His Exciting Career at Sea

William Taylor Money started his career in the East India Company's navy in 1786 as a lieutenant. This is a rank for an officer on a ship.

Becoming a Ship Commander

By 1793, he became the commander of a ship called the General Goddard. This ship belonged to Sir Robert Wigram, who was his father's business partner. After a very successful first trip, he was given command of other ships owned by Wigram, including one named Walthamstow.

Working in Bombay

In 1801, he stopped sailing the seas and took on a new role. He became the Marine Superintendent for the East India Company in Bombay (which is now Mumbai, India). In this job, he was in charge of the company's ships and naval operations there. He held this important position until 1813.

Leaving His Mark

During his time in India, he was also the president of the Asiatic Society of Bombay starting in 1815. This society was a group that studied the history, culture, and science of Asia. An island in the South China Sea, called Money Island, was even named after him by a British naval surveyor named Captain Daniel Ross.

Life Back in England

After his time in India, William Taylor Money returned to England. He set up his home in Streatham Park, Surrey.

A Director and a Member of Parliament

From 1818 to 1826, he became a Director of the East India Company, just like his father. This meant he helped make big decisions for the company. He also entered Parliament, which is where laws are made. He was a Member of Parliament (MP) for Wootton Bassett from 1816 to 1820. Then, he was an MP for Mitchell from 1820 to 1826.

Later Years and Achievements

In March 1826, he left his role in Parliament when he was appointed as a consul to the Lombard states. A consul is like a representative for a country in another place. Sadly, he passed away in April 1834 from cholera while in Venice.

He was also chosen as a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1818. This is a very high honor for people who have made important discoveries in science. In 1831, he was also given the title of Knight of the Royal Guelphic Order.

His Family Life

William Taylor Money married Eugenia. They had seven sons and two daughters. He left all his property to his wife to take care of their children. Many of his children and grandchildren also went on to serve in India, either in the army or in civil service roles.
