William Verelst (1704–1752) was an English painter who lived in the 1700s. He was known for painting people, still life scenes, and birds.

About William Verelst

William Verelst was born in 1704 and passed away in 1752. He was baptized in a church called St Martin-in-the-Fields. He was the son of another painter named John Verelst. William was also the grandson of Herman Verelst and a cousin of Maria Verelst, who were also artists.

William Verelst painted many different things. He created portraits of people, pictures of everyday objects (called still lifes), and paintings of birds.

Famous Painting

One of his most famous paintings is called Audience Given by the Trustees of Georgia to a Delegation of Creek Indians. He painted this around 1734 or 1735. This painting shows important Muscogee leaders, Tomochichi and Senauki, meeting with English officials. It gives us a look into important historical meetings.

Some old records about artists mistakenly said William Verelst was the son of Cornelius Verelst. However, we now know for sure that he was the fifth of eight children born to the painter John Verelst (who lived from about 1675 to 1734).
