Willie Stevenson Glanton (March 19, 1922 – July 6, 2017) was an important American lawyer and politician from the state of Iowa. She made history by breaking barriers for African American women in law and politics. She was known for her dedication to public service and her work in the community.

Early Life and Education

Willie Stevenson Glanton was born on March 19, 1922, in Hot Springs, Arkansas. She went to college at Tennessee State University. Later, she studied law at the Robert H. Terrell Law School. This education helped her prepare for a career that would change many lives.

A Pioneer in Law

In 1951, Willie Glanton moved to Iowa. Just two years later, in 1953, she achieved a major milestone. She became the second African American woman ever allowed to practice law in Iowa. This was a big step forward for equality and opened doors for others.

After working as a lawyer for some time, she later joined the United States Small Business Administration. Here, she helped small businesses grow and succeed.

Making History in Politics

Willie Glanton continued to make history in politics. In 1964, she was elected to the Iowa House of Representatives. This made her the very first African American woman to serve in that important group of lawmakers. She helped create laws and represent the people of Iowa.

She served in the Iowa House from 1965 to 1966. After her time as a state representative, she returned to her work as a lawyer. She was a member of the Democratic Party.

Later Career and Recognition

Willie Glanton was married to Judge Luther T. Glanton, Jr. They had one son, Luther T., III. Her work and achievements were recognized many times.

In 1986, she was honored by being inducted into the Iowa Women's Hall of Fame. This special award celebrates women who have made a big difference in Iowa. In 2010, The Des Moines Register newspaper named her one of the ten most influential black Iowans.

She also traveled to Africa and Southeast Asia for the U.S. State Department. This showed her involvement in international relations. Willie Stevenson Glanton passed away in Des Moines, Iowa, on July 6, 2017. Her life was an example of breaking barriers and serving her community.
